Dress: Forever21. Shoes: Birkenstocks. Scarf: my mom’s closet.

Two of the biggest trends that have been slowly gaining momentum are the throwbacks from the 70s and 90s. I personally am a big fan of many of the 90s inspired pieces so I thought today that I would feature my new dress and do a 90s style post.

One of my absolute favorite trends right now is the slip dress. It’s great because it’s so versatile. I saw the dress that I’m wearing while shopping with my mom and I knew I had to have it. I really like the nude color, but it also comes in black or gray. The great part about this dress is that it can be worn during the day (like I’m featuring), or it can easily transition to be worn at night; just throw on some chunky heels and a leather jacket! But seriously, slip dresses are great day or night. I just bought another from Topshop that I’ll be featuring soon but it’s currently at Nordstrom being tailored (#shortgirlprobs).

To keep up with the 90s theme I added my Birkenstocks. I LOVE that these shoes are making a comeback. So many people hate on them, but I think they are the comfiest shoes I own (you can tell by how beaten up they look). 50% of people love them and the other 50% think they’re hideous. I think they’re kind of like pugs: so ugly they end up being cute!

Topping off my 90s throwback outfit, I borrowed a bandana/neck scarf from my mom’s closet. As you may know, I featured bandanas in a recent post, and I’m glad to be finally showing it in person. I really like this option because the colors in the floral print tied together with my dress. I mentioned before that I’m not the biggest fan of the classic paisley bandana print, so the flowers were a nice alternative.

Although this look is a mix of a few different 90s inspired pieces, I love that they can all be worn separately. My outfit is definitely a statement maker, but these pieces individually can be easily toned down.

The New Uniform

The New Uniform

From kindergarten to my senior year of high school I went to private school. With private school comes the expectation of a uniform. While I hated having a uniform during those years, looking back I actually kind of miss it. Don’t get me wrong, the uniforms were hideous (especially in middle and high school) and it sucked not being able to express myself through my outfit choices. The part I miss though is the simplicity of knowing exactly what I was going to put on in the morning. It was so easy to roll out of bed and just throw on my uniform, it required zero effort. Now, I’m constantly struggling with what to wear in the morning. To make life easier for myself, I started gravitating towards a tried and true outfit that never steered me wrong. I like to think of it as my “new uniform.”

  1. White Tee. It’s impossible to go wrong with a simple white t-shirt. The one I show in the picture (and the link) is from Madewell and it’s my favorite white tee of all time. I love everything about it from the v-neck to the little pocket. It’s made of a lightweight cotton material that feels like wearing pajamas. Although I personally love this option, any white t-shirt will work for this outfit.
  2. Denim. Although I feature jean shorts in the picture, this is an outfit that can work year round. With summer around the corner, my uniform usually consists of jean shorts, but when it starts to get colder I can easily swap them out for my favorite pair of jeans (I love wearing my ripped boyfriend jeans).
  3. Adidas. I bought my pair of Adidas in August and at that point I didn’t realize how much I was going to love them. They are literally my go-to shoes when I’m in a hurry! I love that sneakers are considered fashionable now because there is nothing comfier than my Adidas. Also, if you’re still looking for a pair of Adidas (they’re constantly selling out), I actually got mine in the children’s section of Footlocker. Kid sizes go up to a 7 now, so if you have small feet like me you can save $10!
  4. Statement piece. I feel like every person has that one accessory they can’t live without. For me, it’s my Michael Kors watch. I’ve had this watch for almost three years now and I wear it almost every day (I have a watch shaped tan line on my wrist!). For me, my watch is my statement piece that I feel completely pulls my outfit together. It’s my signature piece; the outfit wouldn’t be a “Carey outfit” without it. (I must confess, while my watch is my statement piece, I have two other signature accessories that I wear every day: my diamond earrings and my high school ring).

This easy, go-to outfit never fails when I feel rushed in the morning or like I have nothing to wear. The best part is that it leaves room for adjustment. A white t-shirt and denim creates a blank canvas to try new accessories or maybe a bold makeup look. The simplicity of this outfit is what makes it my new uniform.
