Express Jacket, Loft Sweater (shop similar), Zella Leggings (shop similar), Steve Madden Booties

This fall and winter it’s all about luxe fabrics and fur is a top contender. We started with fur vests last year (still very on trend!), but now fur jackets are taking the scene. From toned down shearling to over the top fringe fur, you can’t go wrong with this trend! I just recently picked this jacket up from Express and have been wearing it nonstop. Express is having a great sale right now (50% off), so the jacket sold out in this color, but the navy option is still there. My friend actually bought the navy version of this jacket. It’s super cute and even has a hood! I heard somewhere that this type of fur jacket is called a teddy bear jacket and I just think that is so fitting; I definitely feel like a teddy bear! On another note, because I love this trend so much, I found some other options here, here, and here.

Because it was so cold out while I was shooting this look (and shopping with my parents!) I stayed warm with a sweater underneath my jacket. I got my black sweater from Loft in January, so they’re all sold out now, but the similar option I included looks almost exactly the same. A simple black sweater is essential; this is definitely my go-to sweater when I’m not sure what to wear.

On the bottom, I’m wearing some leggings I just got from Zella (sold at Nordstrom). And let me just say, I’m in love! I heard about them from another blogger and now I’m so glad I found them. They have the same high-quality feel as lululemon, but they’re about half the price! Obviously these have been selling out fast at Nordstrom with the sales, but I found a pair similar to mine. The downside is that the similar option is a little more expensive. But, I’m sure that Nordstrom will be restocking soon. I actually want to try out some of the other athletic wear from this brand since I love my leggings so much.

As per usual, I’m finishing off my look with my black booties. I wear them with pretty much everything. Although these aren’t on sale, I highly suggest checking out some Cyber Monday deals for black booties if you don’t own any yet!

Thanks for reading, and happy shopping the Cyber Monday sales!

Old Navy coat (similar), Loft scarf (similar), denim shirt (similar), aerie sweater (similar), lulu’s.com leggings (similar), Steve Madden booties

Yesterday, my mom and I convinced my dad that we needed to go out for brunch. One place I’ve always wanted to try, but never had is Miss Shirley’s Cafe. Everyone says that you need to be prepared to wait forever to get in. We must have gotten really lucky, because we were seated right away. Let me just say, I’ve never had a more delicious meal. I tried the coconut cream stuffed french toast that was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and it was AMAZING. Honestly though, I could’ve split the french toast with another person.

Anyway, on to my outfit. When I flew into Baltimore on Friday, it was pretty warm, but Saturday night it got really cold. So yesterday was somewhere in the 30s or 40s (read: very cold). Layers are definitely a must when the weather starts to drop. I layered a denim button-down top under a cozy sweater for my look. I love the way the collar looks underneath the sweater, giving the outfit a preppy vibe.

To keep the outfit from looking too preppy, and to keep warm, I paired the tops with my faux-leather leggings. If you don’t already have a pair, get some now! They are seriously the best. You can dress them down for brunch like me, or dress them up to wear out on a Friday night. I also think that they’re warmer than jeans, so they were perfect yesterday.

If you’ve been following my blog for awhile now, you’ll notice my Steve Madden booties making an appearance again. They’re definitely my go-to fall shoes. You can’t go wrong with a pair of black suede booties!

Finally, I finished off my look with a peacoat and scarf. I did not think I was going to be breaking out my peacoat yet, but it was just so cold I had to. I am a big fan of camel colored coats for the fall and winter. The color goes with anything and just looks sophisticated. I’m also so in love with my Loft scarf. I’ve had it for a few years now and it’s always my go-to scarf. Like a camel coat, a white scarf goes with every outfit.

I hope you liked this post and if you’re in the Baltimore area, go to Miss Shirley’s ASAP!

Laurel Castillo Makeup

So last week I was bored and decided to watch something on Netflix. I came across How to Get Away With Murder and I was hooked. I never binge watch shows, but this one I did. I’m so obsessed with this show. One thing I love about the show is the style, especially Laurel’s. I’m in love with all her outfits and her makeup (also I completely ship her and Frank!). Once I saw her makeup, I knew I needed to recreate it. After playing around with my makeup for awhile, I think I have it down, so I wanted to share this tutorial with all of you. And on a side note, if you don’t watch How to Get Away With Murder, I highly recommend.

img_2012

To start this look, like always, I start with a primer. I got this sample from smashbox in my birch box and I really love. I probably wouldn’t recommend it to those with oily skin, but personally I like the added moisture it gives my underneath my makeup. After that I used my beauty blender to apply my usual bareMinerals foundation and concealer. Of course I have to top off my face makeup with my undereye brightener.

img_2021

After the base is set, I move onto contouring and highlighting. Laurel’s face is always perfectly contoured in the show so I use my bronzer from tarte to contour along  the hollows of my cheek, my temples, the sides of my nose, and under my chin. My trick for contouring the hollows of my cheeks is to make a fish face and brush the bronzer just under your cheek bone.

Before I move on to highlighter, I add a little blush. Laurel always has a nice flush, but it isn’t too dramatic. I recommend using whatever blush you have that gives you a little color, but still looks natural. I personally use a bareMinerals blush in lovely. Just swirl a small amount onto the apples of your cheeks and you’re good to go!

For highlighter, I used  Benefit’s Watt’s Up! highlighter (I also really like Benefit’s high beam highlighter as well). I applied highlighter on the top of my cheek bones, above the blush, down my nose, under the arch of my brow, and along the cupid’s bow of my lips.

The next step for this look is eyebrows. Laurel’s thick, dark eyebrows are a key part of her look. For mine I just used an eyeliner brush and grayish-brown eyeshadow, since I’m out of an eyebrow pencil. Honestly, this works just as well as a pencil or gel, but I do like IT Cosmetics’ universal brow pencil.

The next part of this look is the eyes. Laurel’s eye makeup is dark, but subtle to create a sultry look. For this look I’m using my Naked Smoky Palette from Urban Decay. The first step is to sweep a shimmery champagne color all over the eyelid. After that, I use a shimmery light brown on the outer corner. The trick is to create a small V on the outer corner of your eye, going slightly into the crease. Although the color is pretty light, it gives some depth to your eyes.

Also from the Smoky Palette, I use a dark brown color for eyeliner. Because Laurel’s look is so seamlessly blended, I’m using an eyeshadow instead of eyeliner because it isn’t as harsh. Using an eyeliner brush, I sweep the dark brown color on my upper lash line, staying as close as possible to my eyelashes, and along my water line. Although I do prefer the eyeshadow, later in the day it starts to come off of my water line, so I might touch it up with a brown eyeliner.

For the finishing touch, I curl my eyelashes and apply a few coats of mascara. Laurel’s eye lashes really stand out, so curling is essential for this look. Finally, I apply the lipstick. This look is based off of Laurel’s season 3 makeup, so a rosy/fuschia lip color is a must. The lip color I’m using is an old one from Rimmel London in the color Kiss. It’s been discontinued, but I found some similar ones: here, here, and here.

Here is the final look, I hope you liked this tutorial! I’m also thinking of doing an outfit post based off of Laurel’s style in the show, so let me know what you think.

Bag Spill

Bag Spill

Today I wanted to share with you all what’s in my bag. I think the things people choose to carry around with says a lot about that person (spoiler: my bag says I’m a lipstick junkie). I’m someone who likes small purses, so obviously that limits what I can and cannot carry around with me. So, here’s what’s  in my bag:

  1. The bag itself. I got this purse for Christmas maybe two years ago? I’ve gotten new bags since then, but I always fall back on this one. You can’t go wrong with a black bag, and I like the design of this option too. Usually, Michael Kors bags are made with saffiano leather, which looks nice, but makes the bag even heavier. This bag is made with a much smoother, lighter leather which I love. I’m also a fan of crossbody bags in general. Although I don’t actually where them across my body (I prefer just on one shoulder), I like to stay hands free with my bags. Like I said, this bag is at least two years old, but I’ve linked a similar version here. The design is the same, but it is made of the saffiano leather I mentioned before.
  2. Wallet. Also, from Michael Kors, I really love this wallet. I choose the neutral snakeskin pattern because it goes with a lot of my other bags when I want to with out. Like I said before, I typically go for smaller bags, so I need a smaller wallet. I like this one because while it is small, I can fit a lot in it (although it takes some shoving on my part). Again, I couldn’t find my wallet online (even though I only got it back in the spring), so here is a similar option.
  3. Sunglasses. Ok, I seem to be having a Michael Kors theme going on, but I seriously love these glasses. They shape is just a touch trendy which I love, but not too over the top to be classic. I almost always have sunglasses when I leave my apartment; I literally cannot drive without them. I read once that blue eyes tend to be more sensitive to the sun, so maybe that’s my problem, but sunglasses are essential.
  4. Microfiber cloth. This usually comes with sunglasses when you buy them, but if you don’t have one I provided a link to some that you can buy from Amazon. Not only are these great for cleaning my sunglasses, but I also use my cloth to clean my phone as well.
  5. Nail polish. This is sort of random to have in my bag, but the nail polish has been in there for months when I took it with me to get a pedicure. But, who knows? Maybe I’ll have a time when I’m not home and I really want to paint my nails?
  6. Lipstick. As you can see, I actually have three different lipsticks in my purse from NARS. The first that I linked is my newest lipstick in Bette. I love the deep bordeaux color of this lipstick, it’s so perfect for fall. I also have Charlotte, which is a nice burgundy color I bought last fall, and Lana, a super bright orangey-red I got over the summer.
  7. Lip balm. Obviously I have an obsession with lip products. But, I think lip balm is essential. I really like this version from Burt’s Bees because it’s slightly tinted to give my lips a little color, and just really hydrates them when I need it.
  8. Hair supplies. Unless I specifically style my hair, I never really know what it’s going to do. Also, sometimes you just need to tie your hair back. The first item I linked is for the hair ties I use. I need to slightly thicker hair ties for my hair to actually stay up, but I just use regular ones from Target. I also cannot live without my hair clips. I use them all the time, and they’re constantly going missing, so I usually have one or two in bag for emergencies or as a back up when I can’t find them anywhere else. Last but not least, bobby pins. I actually don’t even use bobby pins that often because they don’t do that much for me. But, every now and then they come in handy. I like that the ones I bought came in case so I don’t lose them or have bobby pins all over the place.
  9. Keys. This is pretty self explanatory. Although, to be honest, I don’t know what all of the keys on my key ring are for… Also, gotta have that gym membership card on your key ring!

Thanks for reading! Hope everyone has a happy Monday!
