Borrowed From Grandma: 5 Trends to Wear Now or Later

Amidst all of the 90s and Y2K styles that are popping up all over the fashion world, there’s a slightly different fashion movement that I’m all about. Instead of focusing on a specific decade, this summer and coming fall are all about a concept: grandma style. Whether you want to channel a full-on granny look or not, there are definitely trends creeping in that are generally associated with grandma style. Don’t worry, I’m about to fill you in.

Silk Scarves

Coming up as my favorite “grandma trend” over the summer is silk scarves! Whether you want to wear your scarf as a top like I did — and there are soooo many ways to tie a scarf as a top — or in your hair or even tied on your bag, you can’t go wrong. The best part about this trend is that you don’t have to break the bank for it. My scarf is actually a vintage silk scarf from my grandma! So, if you have a mom or grandma (or aunt?) go raid their closet for some great vintage finds! And if you don’t, you can easily find a vintage scarf on Etsy.

Pearl Details

When I first heard that pearls were coming back in style, I’ll admit it. There was a cringe moment. All I could think of was the awful fake pearl beads I used to wear from Claire’s and I would prefer to leave that tragic image in the past. However, I am now fully on board with the pearl details. The easiest way to wear this trend is with your jewelry. I think what’s notable here is that even if the pearls are fake, there’s an emphasis on making them not look tacky. I especially like the kind of pearl detailing that isn’t perfectly round, rather more natural looking. Another fun way I’ve seen pearl detailing is on the straps of tops and I’m here for it!

Knit Cardigans

This grandma trend probably isn’t new to you. Unless you’ve been hibernating since last fall, you’ve probably noticed by now that little cardigans are what all the cool kids are wearing. I loved the cardigan sets we saw in the spring and the short-sleeve crops in the summer. Fall, though, is bringing its fashion A-game with embroidered details. We’re talking full-on grandma, that somehow still manages to look modern. If there’s one trend I’m excited to rock this fall, this is it.

Structured Bags

If you’re sitting here thinking grandma trends aren’t really for you, don’t sleep on this one. Structured bags might feel completely modern, but they are a definite throwback! Opt for a smaller bag over a large one to really stay on trend.

Sweater Vests

So this one might actually be more grandpa than grandma in nature, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less trendy! I started seeing sweater vests pop up around spring and I’ve been waiting for fall so I can start wearing them. The key here is to choose an oversized sweater vest — not a formfitting one that looks like a stereotypical 90s mathlete uniform. I think they look so chic thrown over a skirt or pair of shorts with a basic top underneath! This is a trend for those who really want to stay ahead of the game.

Anyway, that’s it for my grandma trends. Let me know which one you’re loving in the comments below!

Carey

  1. Is that a scarf you are wearing? How clever! I would’ve never guessed it if I hadn’t read you blog. The outfit and the accessories suit you to a T. I feel that structured bags pair well with modern style of clothing, especially formal wear like a pencil skirt or a pant suit with a blazer.
