Spring Denim Guide: 4 Styles Your Closet Needs

Spring Denim Guide: 4 Styles Your Closet Needs

In case you missed it, I shared my fall denim guide back in October, so I thought I should do the same for this season and share my spring denim guide! Obviously I’ve been a huge fan of straight leg jeans, but there are some other denim types that I think are having a moment in Spring 2020.

But, before I get into the styles I’m loving, I have to talk about this outfit! I mean, how freaking cute is this puff sleeve top? I shared it on Instagram stories as part of my Daily Faves and knew I had to have it. The color and the voluminous sleeve are just perfect together. Tucked into a pair of straight leg jeans, I kept the look casual with my new favorite sneakers. This look would also be so cute dressed up with a pair of heels. All in all, I think it’s the ultimate spring look. Now, keep reading for my top four denim picks!

Mom Jeans

90s inspiration has increasingly made an appearance in recent fashion trends, but the most notable is the mom jean. Although it has a bad rep for being an unflattering shape, the modern version is anything but. The high waist paired with a baggier fit around the leg area is the perfect combo to pair with your spring tops.

White Denim Jeans

White jeans are easily the most iconic denim style for spring. There’s something so fresh about a white wash that you just gravitate towards when the weather starts to warm up. Bonus: you can easily try one of the other three styles in a white wash!

Straight Leg Jeans

Like I mentioned above, straight leg jeans are my absolute favorite style at the moment. They’re such a flattering style and instantly elevate any outfit. When I’m trying to put together a chic look, I will grab straight leg jeans over other styles 97% of the time. It’s definitely a style worth investing in because I can’t imagine it going anywhere soon!

Flare Jeans

I don’t know why, but I absolutely love a flare jean for spring! I think it’s because I love pairing flare jeans with wedge sandals—something about that combo is just way too cute! Opt for a lighter pair during the day with a cute little spring top and a darker wash at night for a nice night-out/date night look.

There you have it: my top four spring denim picks! Tell me your favorite style in the comments below!

How to Elevate a Basic Outfit with 3 Simple Steps

How to Elevate a Basic Outfit with 3 Simple Steps

I can’t even begin to count the number of times I’ve been accused—used jokingly—of dressing up when everyone else is dressed casually. And my response usually is 1) I just love to dress up and 2) I’m wearing a simple outfit. And that right there is the main point of today’s post: how to take a simple, basic outfit and make it look more polished. So, with that in mind, I have three easy tips that you can incorporate to take your look from standard to stand-out!

Choose the Right Shoe

Let’s take the outfit above. Basically all I’m wearing is a white long-sleeve tee and black leggings. It doesn’t get more basic than that. But, using my first tip to choose the right shoe, the outfit is infinitely more eye catching. I will say just the fact that the shoes are snakeskin make the look more interesting, but the actual design of the shoe itself plays an important role. There’s something about a pointed toe that gives any outfit a more polished effect. And bonus—it helps elongate your legs! Along with that, the heel also adds some flavor. And it doesn’t have to be a stiletto like this one! Honestly, I never wear heels unless they’re a block heel. But any little lift makes all the difference.

Play With Draping

My next tip has to do with how you drape your clothes. I don’t think it’s a shock to anyone at this point that I like my shirts tucked in, whether that’s a full tuck or a half-tuck in the front. For this look, since the tee is pretty oversized, a half-tuck into the leggings worked well. It defines the waist and keeps you from getting lost in a sea of fabric. Not only should you pay attention to draping at the waist, but draping around the neck and shoulders is also important. Again, because the tee is oversized, it tends to fall off of the shoulder. To maximize this effect, I added a bralette underneath. It just makes the outfit that much more interesting. And even if your tee isn’t necessarily falling off of your shoulder, a bralette underneath gives a bit of a focal point.

Add Luxe Accessories

Last, but not least, adding luxe accessories really gives your outfit that wow-factor! And this doesn’t mean you need luxury/designer accessories, just pieces that are well crafted. For this outfit—but also pretty much all of my outfits—I added dainty, gold jewelry. Jewelry always helps an outfit look more pulled together, but it can also tear the look down. Over-the-top jewels are not your friend here. Instead, opt for minimal pieces that work together. And if you do decide you need to have a statement piece, make sure the it’s the only statement. Back to my outfit, though, I took the gold theme and carried it throughout. Both my handbag and my sunglasses feature gold hard wear—something you wouldn’t necessarily notice but creates harmony in the outfit. So, unless you’re a pro, I would avoid mixing your metals to keep the look cohesive.

Anway, those are my three tips for elevating a simple outfit. I would love to know your thoughts in the comments below!

3 Spring Trends I Can Get Behind

3 Spring Trends I Can Get Behind

I think I’ve been saying this every day, but I am so, so ready for spring! I always feel like there’s a fashion slump right after Christmas where I feel so uninspired. And when February finally roles around, I start to embrace all things pink which has me longing for spring clothes. So, while I live in a fantasy land where it’s warm and sunny, I thought I should share the top three spring trends I’m loving and shopping for!

1. Tie-Dye

So this is probably my favorite trend this season. I’ve been sharing tie-dye pieces non-stop since the beginning of January, and have already started adding to my own collection. I love that you can incorporate this trend in so many ways. From tops to dresses to accessories, etc. there are so many options!

2. Neon

Bright, neon colors are having a moment, especially sherbet orange and hot pink! I’m a little wary of highlighter greens and yellows, but still think they can be so cute!

3. Crochet

Crochet is a new trend that I haven’t seen much of in the past, but I’m here for it! It’s definitely a 70s throwback, but with a modern twist. Crochet also gives off a boho vibe that is so fun for spring, especially during concert and festival season. I can’t wait to wear it!

Leopard Dress for Spring + Podcast Recommendations

Leopard Dress for Spring + Podcast Recommendations

Leopard Dress for Spring

Incorporating more lifestyle type posts was one of my goals this year, so I thought today would be a good day to start. And to start with a topic I’m quite passionate about: podcasts! But, before we get into that topic, we need to talk about this outfit. A leopard dress is a must any time of year. While I’m dreaming of spring, a lightweight dress in a leopard print is the perfect transitional piece.

I love that this long sleeve leopard dress can easily be styled in so many ways. It’s still pretty chilly in Maryland, so pairing it with knee-high boots (and a coat!) is a must. But, once the weather warms up, I think it would look so cute with sneakers and a denim jacket! The possibilities when it comes to this dress are almost endless. Whether you want to style it up or down, a leopard dress is a closet staple.

Podcast Recommendations

True Crime

  1. My Favorite Murder: If there is one podcast you’re going to listen to, make it this one! I’ve been a fan for years and it’s what actually got me into true crime in the first place. Hosts Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark drop weekly episodes covering different true crime stories. What makes it different than others though is that they are so, so funny. You wouldn’t think true crime and humor go together, but they make it work!
  2. Serial: This is actually the first ever podcast I listened to (way back in my junior year of high school). A Journalist covers the murder of a Baltimore high school student in 1999 to uncover whether or not her boyfriend at the time is actually guilty. I still can’t make up my mind!
  3. Crime Junkie: I just started listening to this podcast, but I love the short, sweet, to-the-point way host, Ashley Flowers, cover true crime stories!

Pop Culture

  1. The Morning Toast: I’m not the biggest pop culture junkie, but I do like to stay informed. The Morning Toast, hosted by sisters Claudia Oshry (Girl With No Job) and Jackie Oshry, is absolutely hilarious. Every weekday morning the sisters share the top five pop culture stories you need to hear before, as they say, you “take a bite out of your morning toast.”
  2. The Snatchelor: If you like The Morning Toast, you’ll probably also want to listen to the Snatchelor, hosted by another Oshry sister, Margo. The Snatchelor covers all things Bachelor Nation every Tuesday morning. I highly recommend if you’re watching it this season!

  1. Blogging Unscripted: If you’re looking for a podcast that covers blogging tips, tricks, and best practices, this is my go-to! Host Danielle Gervino gives the best advice, covering so much information in each episode.
  2. Lore: I have always been weirdly interested in the supernatural and Lore definitely indulges me! This podcast delves into the origins of folklore, ghost stories, and more and I find it so fascinating. Also, the host’s voice is incredibly soothing!
  3. The Last Podcast On the Left: I didn’t include this podcast in the true crime list because even though the hosts do cover a ton of true crime stories, they do so much more. Basically, any nerdy topic is game on this show! I don’t listen all the time, but certain episodes catch my eye. One of my favorites was the 4 part series the three men did on Rasputin. Warning: this podcast is FULL of guy humor.

So, there you have it: the leopard dress I’m wearing now and into spring and the 8 podcasts I rotate between! Did you like today’s post? Let me know if I should cover more lifestyle topics in the comments! And definitely comment with your podcast recommendations!
