Do you ever have an idea for an outfit in your head and then lay it out and think it might be too risky? Well that’s how I felt with this outfit, but once I tried it on I died. I haven’t loved an outfit so much in a looooong time. I actually put this outfit together just for an Instagram post but with how much I loved it, it had to be made into a full blog post.

Ok, backstory over, back to the outfit. I may have said this before, but winter is actually my favorite time of year for fashion. The reason? Textures. I LOVE winter textures. From satin and silk, to velvet and leather, to fur and sequins—I’ll take one of each please! And while some people are afraid to mix these textures, I’m a firm believer in doing so. Of course, if you’re still intimidated keep reading for my tips to pull off mixing them.

The first is to stick with two main textures (obviously, fashion is all about expressing yourself so if you want to go with more, you do you!). Two textures keeps the outfit looking chic, without looking overwhelming. For my outfit, I chose to mix velvet and leather, which I think are two of the more accessible winter fabrics (as opposed to fur or sequins).

My second tip is to keep the colors within the same family. That doesn’t mean don’t play around with colors though! I actually have quite a few colors going on in this outfit, but they all have a warm tone to them, which I think helps tie the look together.

My last tip when it comes to mixing textures is to just have fun with it! I find the dark days and cold temps semi depressing, and the one thing that makes it bearable—aside from the holidays!—is having fun creating more glamorous outfits!

What are your thoughts on mixing winter fabrics? I’d love to hear them in the comments below!

A Cooler Way to Transition to Fall

A Cooler Way to Transition to Fall

Leather Shorts | Graphic Tee | Sneakers | Bag | Sunglasses | Watch

It’s officially September and I’m ready for fall. Crisp air, cozy sweaters, and pumpkin everything. Unfortunately, it doesn’t quite feel like fall. So, we need to get a bit creative. Which brings me to these leather shorts!

Everything about these shorts called to me as soon as I saw them in stores. The color, the material the fit, I love it all. And it’s those details that make them the perfect transition piece for fall.

The color. Burnt orange screams autumn to me. It’s not quite a Halloween orange that’s garish to look at. Instead, this color reminds me of falling leaves.

The material. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I love leather. I own leather skirts, shorts, jackets, boots, and even a leather dress. But, it’s definitely not a fabric to be worn year round and that’s why I love leather shorts. I wouldn’t wear them in the dead of summer, but at the end of summer, leather shorts are perfect to start moving us towards fall.

The fit. Not to say the style of these shorts is limited to fall, but I do like a nice belted waist at autumn. Even better, the shorts are almost a paper bag-waist fit, which I’m a huge fan of.

Keeping this look summer appropriate, I had to add a graphic tee. I actually grabbed this shirt just so I had something to try on with the shorts in the dressing room, and fell in love with the pairing. It’s also hard to tell in the photos, but the glasses on the girl are actually little appliqués on the shirt!

Anyway, I hope you like this look! Leave a comment below telling me what you want to see next!

You read it here: leather shorts + black tights + your fave booties = your new fall uniform. There only so many times you can wear your go to denim before it starts to get boring, and dresses and skirts require tights unless you plan to freeze. While you can’t avoid the tights with this outfit either, it’s much more unexpected.

I chose a pair of leather shorts because, unlike my summer shorts, this fabric feels much more season appropriate. I kept the look simple and paired the shorts with my favorite white bell sleeve top and the black booties I wear non-stop. Both items are from last fall, but I found a similar shirt and booties so you can shop the look.

Find other fall shorts I’m loving here, here, here, and here! Also, I’m headed to Edinburgh this weekend, so if anyone has some recommendations, let me know in the comments below!
